Masterplanning studies for a series of modern resorts situated on a number of sites along the eastern coast of Sri Lanka were undertaken as a response to the brief from an established Sri Lankan hotelier. Multiple hotel developments were part of a major regional development plan which aimed to bring back tourism to this stunning sun-kissed peninsula, which had been devastated by years of conflict and the tsunami of 2004. The overall objective was to appeal to local and international holiday makers, through a modern and sustainable design. Each of the sites presented its own design challenges such as a narrow beach front and deep footprint.

Our approach was to maximise the views and natural scenery and to lay out the resort in harmony with the existing topography and vegetation. The most prominent landscape features were designated as destinations, each with a different character and associated with a specific activity, to enrich the guest experience. As part of our service, we assisted the client with strategic brief definition, provided analysis of the locations and analysis of exemplar developments, which then formed the basis for detailed masterplanning studies.
