A student housing scheme was developed for one of Polish leading universities wishing to introduce student accommodation to its rapidly expanding campus situated on a greenfield site on the outskirts of Poznan. The brief called for 800 bed spaces, accompanied by a mix of retail, cafes, nursery and a cultural centre. The accommodation was arranged around three south-facing sunny courtyards, and housed in buildings up to 5 storeys high, undulating between existing mature trees.
Each courtyard has a distinctive character and function: a civic square with an amphitheatre; a park with sport facilities; a more sheltered quarter catering for young families. Retail and cafes are facing the academic buildings to provide links between these two parts of the campus. Student bedrooms, based on an adaptable module, are arranged in clusters of various sizes to cater for the different requirements of under and postgraduates, as well as junior university staff.
