The scale, appearance and fabric of the original house built in the 1950’s did not compare well with its more handsome Arts and Crafts influenced neighbours within the West Putney Conservation Area. The client’s wish was to extend the building and reconfigure the layout to suit the needs of their family, a brief that gave an opportunity for a more thorough overhaul and upgrade of the building fabric. To enhance its street presence, we increased the height of the house, creating an additional habitable storey accommodating an artists' studio with a north facing picture window.
An innovative asymmetric roof pitch was designed and shaped to match the heights of the adjacent buildings and to avoid overshadowing. A more coherent look was introduced with new yellow stock brick cladding and new dark grey aluminium windows. The rear conservatory was extended and reconfigured to provide a light flooded, generous kitchen and dining area.
